It’s no surprise that a foundation is called a foundation: it’s the basis of your entire home. Essentially, in house-building, it’s square one, and a mighty important one at that. Because without it, the structure would not stand.
But that doesn’t mean you can start digging for your future home tomorrow. No, there is a proper way to go about foundation building that prevents long-term damage and ensures short-term efficiency. Interested?
Well, all you have to do is follow these three basic steps:
- Backyard, Prepare Yourself. The foundation will be a major force of change to your land; it’ll dig up what you have already planted, and be the center of the backyard. So be ready for that when it happens. To prevent root damage, move your plants away from the construction site. Had re-landscaping on the mind anyway? Good!
- Make a Pathway. The foundation will be your main access point to your future home for the few first months of the construction process. Take that into consideration as you prepare: move any unnecessary debris out of the way, and have a solid entryway so workers can easily come and go. If you don’t do it now, you’ll have to do it later.
- Don’t Let the Water In! As important as a foundation is, it’s also very vulnerable to outside forces of nature. And while this won’t matter once the home is built, it matters now. So, you’re gonna need protection. As we mentioned before, the plants—in addition to root damage, removing these plants will also help stem off water access. And yes, if you haven’t re-graded your yard in a wild for water drainage, this is most definitely the time.
